Historical Summary

The book of Ruth takes place during the time of the judges. Naomi, widowed and bereaved of her sons, returns from Moab to Bethlehem with her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth, who pledges loyalty not only to Naomi but also to Israel’s God. To provide for them, Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative, who treats her with kindness and protection.

Naomi then directs Ruth to seek Boaz as a kinsman-redeemer. After settling the matter legally, Boaz marries Ruth, and their son Obed becomes the grandfather of King David. This brief story highlights God’s providence and redemption, showing how loyalty and faith in Him lead to blessing and place Ruth, a foreigner, in the lineage of Christ.
