Historical Summary
Joshua 1–10 records Israel’s first steps into the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. After Moses’ death, God charged Joshua to be strong and courageous. Israel crossed the Jordan miraculously, set up memorial stones and celebrated the Passover. The fall of Jericho displayed God’s power, while Achan’s sin at Ai showed the cost of disobedience. Once corrected, Israel regained victory and advanced in battle.
Joshua’s role as leader grew clearer as the law was read publicly at Mount Ebal. The Gibeonites tricked Israel into an alliance, but God still gave Joshua victory over a coalition of kings who attacked them. At Gibeon, God rained down hailstones and made the sun stand still, showing the triumph came from Him. These chapters mark Israel’s firm beginning in the Promised Land and highlight Joshua as the courageous leader through whom God brought His people forward.
