Historical Summary
Genesis 28–35 follows Jacob as he flees from Esau and encounters God at Bethel, where the covenant promises are confirmed. In Haran, he serves Laban, marries Leah and Rachel, and fathers many children. Though deceived and tested, Jacob is blessed, gaining wealth and family as God prepares him to return to Canaan.
On his return, Jacob wrestles with the angel of the Lord, receives the new name Israel, and reconciles with Esau. He builds altars at Bethel, affirming his faith in the God who preserved him. These chapters mark Jacob’s transformation from a fugitive into the patriarch of Israel, establishing the foundation for the twelve tribes.
